On August 17, Lake Macquarie City Council and the University of Newcastle held the annual science and engineering discovery day challenge for all primary schools in the area.
The day-long competition designed to provide year 5 and 6 primary school students throughout the Lake Macquarie City Council area with a positive experience of science and engineering.
A maximum of eight schools can compete against each other at one central venue, which for the last few years has been Avondale School at Cooranbong.
This year each school was divided into six groups made up of between three and five students.
These groups then worked on two half-day science and engineering activities.
There were six different activities in total.
Students were awarded points for each activity and the school with the most cumulative points at the end of the day was declared the winner.
This year the champion school, receiving the challenge trophy, was Heritage College Lake Macquarie.
Heritage College is located at Morisset.
The school currently has 180 students and provides curriculum in all main subject areas from kindergarten to year 12.
It is also a long-standing member of the Hunter Region of Independent Schools.
