Greyhound report floored
I WRITE in reference to your story “Greyhound ban a sure thing” (Lakes Mail, August 18). I would like to ask Greg Piper why he is endorsing the ban and if he has read the report that the government is using to ban racing?

This report is badly floored and is the basis for a number of false “facts” about the greyhound industry.
Most arguments for the ban refer to “mass killings” and “systematic cruelty” and are reported as fact. Even if these were true, surely they should be reported as “alleged”.
Most media agencies give mass murderers an “alleged”. Where are the mass convictions of these crimes?
Those people advocating the ban are using emotive arguments to condemn all the greyhound trainers because of the actions of a very few who commit these alleged crimes. And the condemned are replying by using political arguments.
Not a level playing field for this important problem.
The latest news reports say that the government wishes to ban breeding and cull the greyhound.
Does Mr Piper wish to be seen as an instrument for the extermination of a wonderful breed of dog, or does he just follow the orders of the party?
Finally, I wish to point out that the sport of fishing is very cruel. Is that going to be attacked next?

Sad to see council gone
I AM disappointed to see the end of Wyong Council. I look forward to their ambition and drive for greatness being the foundation of a combined greater Central Coast Council.

The onus on Olympians
NO one can deny that every Olympian has put in an extreme effort to get to Rio. However, they should realise a lot of taxpayers’ money has been invested in them. I believe this puts on them a responsibility to behave safely, and as an example to the young who would like to emulate their achievements.

Don’t send nude pics
IF young women don’t want their nude or sexually explicit photographs plastered all over the internet the answer is simple – don’t send them out. I think it is symptomatic of many stupid things that girls do that boys get blamed for.

Government death wish
THE Baird government must have a death wish. First the greyhound fiasco putting hundreds if not thousands out of work. Then the death knell for the train manufacturing industry in Newcastle. I hope they have their retirement plans ready for after the election.

Record still stands
THE Australian runner, Peter Norman, was on the dais as a silver medallist in the 1968 200 metre final when the "black power" salute was given by the two USA sprinters. He was berated by our media on his return to Australia.
He would have won a medal in the 2016 200 metres with his time in 1968. He was a champion for human rights and a great athlete. His time in 1968 is still an Australian record.

A matter of timing
ON the phone with our daughter, who had just arrived home from overseas, we received an email from her out of Los Angeles telling us she would “hopefully be on the flight home tomorrow night”. Could that be what Albert Einstein was on about when he said the past, the present and the future are all together at the one time?
