Acting Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith said that during the past 12 months, police issued nearly 20,000 defects to vehicles for mechanical, brake and tyre faults, fuel and oil leaks, head and brake lights, and other violations.
Singleton (483 defects) had by far the highest number, followed by Muswellbrook (361).
Acting Assistant Commissioner Smith said those issued with a defect received a $108 fine and a notice to have the vehicle repaired. Those receiving a minor defect notice had a yellow label stuck to the windscreen, allowing between 24 hours and 10 days for repair.
