Mullen will play no further part against the Sharks after re-injuring his right hamstring in the dying stages of the first-half.
Mullen returned after 11 weeks on the sideline last week in Newcastle’s 20-16 loss to the Melbourne Storm at Hunter Stadium.
But with about 20 seconds remaining in the first half against the Sharks, Mullen came out of a tackle on Jack Bird grabbing at his hamstring
Mullen limped away and was ruled out at half-time.
“Some devastating news, Jarrod Mullen will play no further part,” Fox Sports sideline commentator Andy Raymond said after half-time.
“He has aggravated a hamstring injury.
“This could be absolutely horrible for Jarrod.
“They are saying they don’t believe it’s severe at this point in time.
“He will not be coming back today.
“I guess his future in limbo at the moment immediately anyway.”
It’s the latest blow for Mullen, who has had a horror run with injuries over the last few years.
Mullen was out for the best part of three months after he injured his hamstring in the Knights 26-10 loss to Manly on Anzac Day.
He later underwent surgery to repair a ruptured hamstring tendon.
He tore his hamstring while playing in the Auckland Nines in 2014, causing him to miss the first month of the NRL season.
Mullen signed a four-year deal worth about $2.2 million in 2014, which would keep him at the club until the end of 2018.
This latest injury setback has many wondering if it might be the end of Mullen’s career.
