But pop-up shelters did levitate and frighten stallholders at the Olive Tree Market on Saturday.
“It was like the opening scenes from the Wizard of Oz,” founder Justine Gaudrey said.
“The stalls were listing.”
Tocal registered a peak wind gust of 72kmh at 10.30am and the same again at 12.30pm and 2pm.
The promise of boutique wares, face painting and upbeat music was enough to lure families all the same.
More than a few mums and bubs took refuge in Maitland Regional Art Gallery which put on a weekend art extravaganza that included a basket weaving workshop.
“We really enjoy coming to Maitland and the stallholders love the location,” Ms Gaudrey said.
“People have been incredibly supportive and we asked them to bear with us in the wind.
“We’ve encouraged everyone to come back and see us again in September.”
The Olive Tree Market began in Newcastle in 2008 and came to Maitland in 2015.
