The sculpture, part of the Lake Macquarie Transport Interchange, contains more than 26 tonnes of steel and will adorn a roundabout near the Glendale shopping centre and Hunter Stadium.
The Lakes Mail’s parent paper, The Newcastle Herald, took to the streets to gauge local reaction to the artwork. Residents questioned what the rings signified, voiced their anger at the price tag, and their frustration that council would spend money on a sculpture there.
“What is it?” said ratepayer Sean Ingham. “Is it a half-arsed set of Olympic rings?”
Deb Stanton, of Lakelands, said it was “annoying” to see large sums of money poured into public art.
