East Maitland won 27-17, after opening up a comfortable lead midway through the second stanza.
But the Hammerheads never stopped trying, rallying to score the last two tries of the match.
Southern Lakes second-rower Kelsy Johnson said it was a missed opportunity for the Hammerheads.
“We really needed to get that win, and although we started well we fell asleep for a period in the middle of the game and it cost us,” Johnson said.
“We started to come back late, and we showed a lot of determination to score those two tries at the end.”
Johnson said Josh Perry was a stand-out in his first game at hooker, while try-scorers Mitch Bain and Callum Vizer played with plenty of heart. Stuart Swift was the other try scorer for Southern Lakes.
