Do you often find yourself dwelling on past events?
Perhaps you replay everyday incidents and conversations in your mind, and analyse their implications or how they might have played out differently?
And do you spend a lot of time thinking about what might happen? For instance, do you imagine how scenarios might play out tomorrow, and maybe rehearse your travel route and dialogue in your mind?
Then you’re not alone.
Toronto Private Hospital mental health occupational therapist, Cath Bunton, said it’s a common thinking pattern.
“We spend so much time thinking about things that have happened in the past, or things that may happen in the future, that we forget to appreciate or even acknowledge the moments we are currently living,” Ms Bunton said.
That’s why the hospital will host the ‘Everyday Mindfulness’ workshop, she said.
“Mindfulness is about training ourselves to pay attention and focus on the present.”
Participants in the two-hour workshop will come to understand and experience both the physical and mental benefits of mindfulness, she said.
They will participate in practical exercises to increase their mindfulness in everyday life.
They will learn how activities such as meditation and yoga can benefit them, and even how just paying more attention during regular daily activities such as driving or taking a walk can increase mindfulness.
Mindfulness has its origins in eastern philosophy, where it has been practiced for thousands of years.
It has become more popular in western societies in recent decades, Ms Bunton said.
Hospital CEO, Andrew Mereau, encouraged Lake Macquarie residents to participate in the workshop.
“There is a lot of evidence on the many and varied benefits of mindfulness,” Mr Mereau said.
“It can help reduce stress and anxiety, improves sleep, moods and memory and also has proven physical benefits such as improved immunity, circulation and pain management.”
The free workshop will be held on site at the hospital on Wednesday, March 16, from 6pm to 8pm.
