What the council is planning to build, however, is a Morisset town centre.
A story in last week’s Lakes Mail quoted a Lake Macqurie City Council spokesperson explaining why the “Morisset Multi-Purpose Centre” had not been nominated by the council for a share in $50 million of state government funding through the Hunter Infrastructure and Investment Fund (HIIF).
To be eligible for funding, projects must be at a specific stage of completion.
“On the western side of the lake the only project that could qualify for the HIIF program would be the Morisset Multi-Purpose Centre, however the project did not yet meet development requirements to be considered for funding,” the spokesperson said.
They were in fact referring to the planned Morisset town centre, which would include a library and community centre – that is, a building with multiple purposes.
The design and community consultation for the town centre proposal are still being developed.
Morisset Multi-Purpose Centre, however, has been established on Dora Street since 2004.
It is the home of Southlake Community Services Incorporated.
Among the services on offer there are Southlake Neighbourhood Centre; Horizons disability program; Happy Hippo toy library; Yunung community bush tucker garden; Southlake bus hire; and venue hire.
Other long-term tenants at the centre include Southlake Carers (seniors care) and Hunter New England Health’s Kaleidoscope program.
