Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, said Lake Macquarie had some of the state's best waterways.
"We should all throw a line in, and enjoy the outdoors and the benefits of fishing," he said.
"The day has been specially designated to encourage locals to hone their fishing skills, as well as looking after the aquatic environment.
"Go Fishing Day delivers on a NSW Government election commitment to designate a special day for fishing, a fun and active pastime that anyone from any age can enjoy."
There are 50 rod-and-reel fishing combos to be won.
