I NOTED the letter from Glen Coulton ("Religion collides with science classes", Lakes Mail, June 18) and admit I was a little bemused by what his actual concerns were.

Was it the science versus creation debate, the government funding of schools, or the issue of scripture classes versus ethics?
I am a Christian and I can find nowhere in the Bible that "confirms that everything that ever existed was created by God a few thousand years ago".
The issue of school funding is something that has been part of Australian history for many years; as the Goulburn Toilet Strike of 1962 showed, Australia could not cope with a totally public school system.
As for scripture versus ethics, I won't even begin a discussion of ethical sources, but again the option of SRE has long been part of NSW education and co-exists with Special Education in Ethics since 1990.
This topic is worthy of a greater debate than a passing reference to Fred Nile (who certainly does not represent all Christian interests).
If we wish to debate this topic, let's do so in a considered manner rather than sling a few barbs to attack some distorted concept that does not stand up to scrutiny.
