Captain Tim Gittins, from the Salvation Army's Bonnells Bay Corp, said the doorknock appeal is very rewarding for young people, particularly those who are about to join the workforce.
"It doesn't do any harm to have a certificate of appreciation from the Salvation Army [in a CV]," Mr Gittins said. "It shows they have community spirit and a willingness to help others.
"The Red Shield appeal is also an opportunity to go out with your friends and have a laugh in an experience you wouldn't have any other way.
"We'd urge all schools and their teachers to consider that this can be a very rewarding and enjoyable exercise to be involved in."
Mr Gittins said the Salvation Army values the help of anyone who volunteers for the appeal. Door knockers would need to donate only about two or three hours of their time.
There are also many other ways people can help.
"We need drivers, people to help run our counting houses and to volunteer at our community collection points," Mr Gittins said.
"The money raised from the weekend will help the Salvos support the region's most disadvantaged and needy people.
"By volunteering to help with this appeal, you really can make a positive difference to the lives of those less fortunate."
■ The appeal will be held on Saturday and Sunday, May 30 and 31. To get involved, call Bonnells Bay Salvation Army on 4973 1735.
