Forty years on and I mentioned this to my stepmother - she suggested that on the ball of your foot is a pressure point connected to the pineal gland at the base of the brain. I presumed this would make it easier to access knowledge.
Later I met the chess player and put my ideas to him. When I asked why he took his shoes off he answered "because it felt good".
