NSW Premier Mike Baird was staggered by the destruction caused by the storm on his tour of the affected region, but was heartened at the way the community pulled together.
Mr Baird visited the Wyong SES Headquarters, where he congratulated the team for dedication to helping others.
"It's very clear they are doing an incredible job for the community that they love," Mr Baird said. "Patience is a requirement, but inspiration is thick on the ground."
A number of locals were at the Wyong SES Headquarters filling sandbags, and Mr Baird praised the community's "anything we can do to help" attitude.
"Those are the words that make us proud of this state and country," he said.
"Hearing those words and seeing them in action, it's not hard to be inspired."
Mr Baird acknowledged the extent of the damage would be "in the hundreds of millions of dollars" and promised the state would do all it could to get the communities affected back on their feet.
