Eight FRNSW crews will carry out a 6.52-hectare hazard reduction at Lakeview Road from 9.30am, pending favourable conditions.
FRNSW Newcastle Zone Commander, Superintendent Brett Davies, said FRNSW were taking advantage of the weather conditions and carrying out the burn not only to reduce fuel loads in the reserve to protect properties but to encourage native vegetation to regenerate.
“This hazard reduction will play a vital role in helping to reduce the intensity of bushfires in the area,” Superintendent Davies said.
“Residents in these areas should not be alarmed and should only call Triple Zero (000) in the event of an emergency.”
Superintendent Davies said smoke may be visible for up to 24 hours after the burn.
Residents in the affected areas are advised to keep doors and windows closed, cover outdoor furniture, remove washing from clotheslines, retract pool covers and ensure pets have a protected area.
Drivers must slow down, keep their windows up and turn their headlights on, while sightseers must keep away from the area for their own safety.
People with asthma or a lung condition should reduce outdoor activities if smoke levels are high, and if shortness of breath or coughing develops, take your reliever medicine or seek medical advice.
