Mayor Jodie Harrison said the funding would make Lake Macquarie a BMX training hub because it would be the only international-standard BMX facility in NSW.
"We are very pleased for the club to receive more than $490,000 to become a base for elite riders. The facility is home to one of the biggest BMX clubs in Australia with more than 400 members," Cr Harrison said.
The funding will be used to build a 5-metre high start ramp, extend the track, and redesign its layout.
Lake Macquarie BMX chairman Michael Mavin said the upgrade would allow the club to host Australian titles and international events, both of which benefit the Lake Macquarie economy.
"NSW until now had no international-standard BMX tracks," Mr Mavin said.
"The closest international standard track was in Brisbane, so it's a great win for Lake Macquarie."
The funding was announced on Friday by NSW Liberal upper house MP Scot MacDonald.
