Internationally-trained doctor Muhammad Wadud has returned to the clinic after being granted approval to resume practising in Wyee.

Dr Wadud had been the resident doctor at the clinic and was recently granted permanent residency, which affected his eligibility to practise in Wyee.

Dr Wadud was facing the prospect of being forced by government policy to shift to work in a rural area.

Patients rallied behind the popular GP, and several of them contacted the Lakes Mail with their concerns.

The company that runs the Wyee clinic, Tristar Medical Group, approached the federal government about the matter.

"Tristar successfully applied for an exemption, which has resulted in Dr Wadud being approved for the Special Approved Placement Program," a Tristar spokesperson said.

The exemption allows Dr Wadud to practise at Wyee until he sits a final exam in May to become a fully qualified, vocationally registered general practitioner.

He will then be free to continue practising in Wyee.

"We are also pleased to advise this has also enabled us to commence a second doctor in the clinic - we welcome Dr Mohammad Islam to Wyee."

Federal Member for Charlton, Pat Conroy, told Tristar he would assist them if they encounter any further impediment to Dr Wadud's Medicare Provider status.

"I'm pleased that the Wyee Medical Centre is reopening. I received a number of enquiries from concerned patients and I know Dr Wadud's return will be welcome," Mr Conroy said.

"I am told there will now be two full-time doctors at Wyee and that the clinic is open to new patients. This is good news."
