On Saturday, Senior Constable Patrick Summers and his dog Marco were called to an aged care facility on McPherson Street after reports a 65-year-old patient was missing. Police and staff from the facility began a search of the area.
About 12.55am on Sunday, Senior Constable Summers and Marco were patrolling around Wyong River when Marco led Senior Constable Summers to a steep embankment.
Initial patrols around and down the embankment failed to locate the missing man.
But when Marco continued to point the officer to the same area of the river, Senior Constable Summers looked through extensive foliage, where the man was located clinging to a tree branch above water.
The man was assisted to land, where he was treated at the scene by ambulance paramedics for minor injuries.
