IT looks like a kind of climbing ivy but it is, in fact, a type of spinach with some impressive traits.
"It's a climbing crop of the amazing Malaysian spinach which offers a far bigger harvest than ordinary spinach or silverbeet would give in the same area, yet with similar nutritional qualities, taste and a brief cooking time," explained permaculture advocate Tom Toogood. "The young leaves are also great for salads."
It's just one of the interesting plants being grown at the new Morisset Community Health Garden, at Morisset Uniting Church - aka the Church in the Trees - on Stockton Street.
This Sunday, March 29, the first guided tour of the garden and a workshop will be held.
Tours and workshops will be run monthly, and visitors can learn how to grow abundant, sustainable harvests organically in their own backyards, Mr Toogood said.
The garden is tended by a group of local volunteers. It includes a dirt cheap vertical garden made from a wooden pallet and recycled pots, a native bee motel, and water recycling no-dig garden beds.
Permaculture teacher Lachlan Storrie will host the garden tour and workshop from 2.15pm.
