Part of the Alaskan Malamute Rehoming Aid Australia organisation, the lodge has been built specifically for malamutes and huskies.

Lodge owner Janelle Wyatt said unlike at traditional kennels, dogs at High Tails Lodge are outside all day.

Ms Wyatt and a small group of volunteers rescue malamutes and huskies from pounds all over the state.

They currently have more than 50 dogs, most of which are available for adoption.

Ms Wyatt encourages people to research the breed before they consider adoption, as they require large, fenced backyards and daily exercise.

The dogs also grow quite large.

While some people may be put off by their size, Ms Wyatt said the fun-loving animals have a habit of winning people over.

"Once you have a malamute you'll never get another breed," she said.

"They are friendly as anything - they love humans and other dogs.

"There is a two-week trial for adoptions, to make sure the dog fits into the family's life, and the family fits into the dog's life."

People can also apply to become volunteers at the lodge, or foster carers.

Ms Wyatt said all vet fees are taken care of, so foster carers need only supply food and love.
