She entered a Newcastle radio station competition called Zoo Faces, hosted by John Paul Young, and sang a song from the movie Dirty Dancing.
She won the competition and went on to perform at the Newcastle Show.
Since then the bundle of blonde energy has never looked back.
Armed with a beautiful voice that cuts through the air on power ballads, Kristy will perform a free gig at Toronto Workers Club tomorrow night.
Her first single, Overdrive, was released in December 2012, reaching No. 19 on the iTunes country chart and made the CMC Top 50.
It was also picked by ABC Records for two compilation CDs - Women in Song, and Beaut Utes 2013.
Buoyed by the success, she raised $5000 towards the production of her extended play and second video clip from a crowd-funding website.
She wrote five of the six songs on the EP, and shares writing credits on Nobody's Gonna Make Me with Mike Carr, one of the best country songwriters in Australia.
■ See Kristy J perform at Toronto Workers Club on Friday, January 23, at 8pm.
