One of those celebrations is Lake Macquarie's citizenship ceremony which welcomes those taking the pledge to become an Australian citizen - a momentous occasion for those who choose to take the journey.
I am honoured to be part of the significant milestone when so many Lake Macquarie residents from different parts of the world become Australians.
It is a highly emotional moment for those becoming citizens, their families and even for me, as these new citizens commit to our nation and sing the national anthem.
The culture and traditions that migrants bring to Australia, including their languages and religions, contribute to making Australia a vibrant community.
As Australians, we are all members of a community which is democratic and in which everyone has equal rights, privileges and opportunities.
Australia's strength lies in its people. Our people have made Australia what it is, building our nation into an open and diverse society of which we can all be proud.
I encourage you to join the Australia Day celebrations and head down to the Lake Macquarie Festival at Speers Point Park.
The festival is a popular day out for families with local entertainment, market stalls, a movie on the big screen, free kids' activities and much more.
This year ARIA award-winning songwriter and comedian Buddy Goode will MC the evening concert featuring Dragon and The Bushwackers.
A spectacular fireworks display will conclude the festival about 9pm.
