WITH a funeral company on board as a major sponsor, it was no surprise that Toronto Women's Bowling Club approached its recent fund-raiser for motor neurone disease research with a slightly macabre sense of humour.

"We decided to call the event the Heavenly Triples, seeing how one of our sponsors was David Lloyd Funerals," club president Nancy McKew said.
A sausage sizzle was a feature of the fund-raiser.
"That's where the bowlers could have 'a cremated sausage on a coffin bun with last rights coleslaw'," Ms McKew quipped.
But the women didn't mess around when it came to the serious business of raising $4700 money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association of NSW.
Club secretary Linda Cunneen said the fund-raiser was a truly collaborative effort.
"When we organised this bowls day we had one of our greens out of commission, so we approached the Wangi men's club to see if we could use their green," Ms Cunneen said.
Wangi Bowling Club granted the women use of the green as well as their barbecue and club facilities.
Furthermore, they waived the usual green fees, enabling the women to channel an extra $800 directly to the cause.
Coles chipped in by providing buns and gift voucher prizes for a raffle, Woolworths provided the coleslaw and a gift card prize, Rathmines Butchery donated 100 sausages, and Escape Travel donated a travel voucher prize.
Other businesses made cash or in-kind donations, Ms McKew said.
