I WRITE in regard to the recent story on the safety problem outside the main entrance to Bonnells Bay Public School ("Growing pains", Lakes Mail, November 13).
This story drew two published responses in the 'Your Say' page of last week's Lakes Mail.
Whilst the letter writers are well intentioned and their letters appreciated, with the points raised acknowledged, Bonnells Bay Progress Association has been working tirelessly to have the problem addressed since 2006.
The school was founded over 100 years ago and all those involved during its infancy could not have imagined the area's massive growth.
I have chaired meetings including a major meeting with the Department of Premier and Cabinet, Education Department, Transport Department, Lake Macquarie City Council (LMCC), school management, the bus company and the Health Department who own the land on which the school sits, plus the surrounding land. The government of the day finally advised that the school's traffic management was solely the responsibility of LMCC.
The convergence of Fishery Point Road and Morisset Park Road, and the increasing traffic flows, are being addressed and the work planned will go a long way to improving the safety problem.
The work includes vastly improved parking and a footpath on the western side of Morisset Park Road with a marked school crossing and the extension of the current bus parking further out along Morisset Park Road.
Our association will continue to push our objective so that improved student safety becomes a reality.
- Col Roach, Bonnells Bay Progress Association president
