"I simply encourage them to look at the plain things all around us and to see the beauty in them," she said.
"I have a passion for teaching art, and I believe children have a basic need for colour, a big piece of paper and a brush.
"I don't touch their work, because I want them to grow. And I think the children have discovered something about themselves this year."
Her classes culminated in the recent Brushes Up exhibition of their works in the school hall.
The evening exhibition was attended by teachers and parents who hadn't previously seen the works.
"The hall was full of parents and community members who spoke very highly of the work done by our students," the school's Sue Burns said.
Students thanked Ms la Roux for her guidance.
"Thank you, because when I started I wasn't very good at art," one said.
"It was fun because we got to paint with stuff you don't normally get to paint with, like sticks," another said.
