IN the early days, if Southlakes Carers' inaugural manager Julia Sugden took five phone calls, it was considered a busy day in the office.
Today, Southlakes Carers has more than 400 clients on its books.
And reception staff are required to handle and direct the constant flow of phone calls.
They are part of Southlakes Carers' 12 paid staff and 75 volunteers.
The organisation celebrated its 30th anniversary last Wednesday. It was a time to reflect on such growth, and to celebrate the positive impact the organisation has had on thousands of lives.
Manager Vivienne Bruce said Southlakes Carers originally catered mainly for locals who needed transport to things such as medical appointments.
"Today, Southlakes Carers provides a range of services for frail aged residents, and people with disabilities," she said.
Providing transport is still a key service. But there is now a seniors day centre, a lunch club, and a support group for carers, among other projects.
"There are a lot of families with carers who have told us they don't know what they would have done without us," Ms Bruce said.
Volunteers power much of the organisation's work. They drive buses, accompany clients on shopping or social visits, work in the reception area of Morisset Multi-Purpose Centre, and help compile newsletters and the website.
"Our volunteers tell us how fantastic it is to work with people who are so grateful for their help," Ms Bruce said.
Christmas lunch
SOUTHLAKES Carers will again host a Christmas Day community lunch at Morisset Multi-Purpose Centre this year.
‘‘The lunch is for any local resident who finds themselves isolated or alone,’’ Ms Bruce said.
A two-course meal is provided by Southlakes Carers with sponsorship support by Lake Macquarie City Council, Morisset Rotary Club, and Dora Creek Workers Club.
Transport is available by appointment, by phoning 49733855.
A non-refundable deposit of $5 is required to book a seat.
