ALMOST half of Australian adults don't have a valid will, local lawyer Ellen Turner said this week.

"And yet it is clearly one of the most important documents you'll ever sign your name to," she said.

It's a statistic that prompted Ms Turner, of Turner Legal, in Cooranbong, to recently host a free wills day for residents at The Grange Village, in Morisset.

She now plans to extend the offer to other local retirement villages.

"Having a valid will in place minimises the risk of your assets being subject to dispute so that they will be distributed according to your express wishes," Ms Turner said.

"A valid will makes your intentions unmistakably clear and that's why the courts hold them in such high regard."

Ms Turner said The Grange Village management had invited her to return in January to run a free education seminar for residents on the importance of having powers of attorney, and appointments of enduring guardianship.
