Independent auditor Price Waterhouse Coopers made note of the ongoing improvement in the council's financial performance, and also referenced financial ratios which indicated the strength of the result.
"After a 10-year drought it is pleasing to see a modest surplus has been achieved and this is because of the dedication and commitment of council and our staff to reduce costs, work smarter and deliver more efficient services," mayor Doug Eaton said.
"After being at the Local Government Conference over the last few days I know we are the envy of other councils.
"There is currently a $400m operating loss per annum across the Local Government sector - so many councils are in financial difficulty. We are one of the few councils in NSW currently delivering a surplus and that is something to be proud of."
Gosford City Council today announced that it had delivered a $12 million operating surplus for the 2013/14 financial year.
Council CEO Paul Anderson said the council had achieved an operating surplus two years ahead of schedule.
“This latest result reflects the fantastic efforts of our staff to put us in a strong and financially sustainable position,” Mr Anderson said.
Lake Macquarie City Council posted an annual deficit of $2.5 million, which was $7 million less than the $9.5 million deficit the council projected for last financial year in May.
