"This year's festival will be one of the largest yet," Rathmines Catalina Memorial Park Association secretary Penny Furner said.
"We have a large air display, a wide range of land-based activities for families to see, touch and experience, sea planes, gliders and a lot of history."
The aerobatics display will start at 11.30am when pilot Paul Bennet takes to the air in a Wirraway.
A Tiger Moth formation will follow at 11.45am.
A range of aircraft will take to the skies over the next two hours, culminating in a Catalina flyover at 1.45pm.
A goal of the festival is to help educate young people about the role Rathmines played in the defence of Australia, Ms Furner said.
The festival is held in and around Rathmines Park, in Stilling Street, at the site of the former RAAF seaplane base at Rathmines, once the largest flying boat base in the South Pacific.
There will also be food and market stalls, a military vehicle show, seaplanes, the cockpit of a Mirage fighter jet, and live music.
The festival runs from 9am to 3pm.
