Nine of the 12 selected in the junior squad hail from the three clubs.
"They are three good examples, and that's not to say there isn't other good work happening out there, but I'd be lying if I said there weren't a couple of grade clubs that could be doing more," McDonald said.
The Newcastle squad is: Harry Macansh, Quinn Fowler, Ryan Van Kemenade (City), Logan Johnson, Griffin Lea, Peter McCredie, Andrew Somerville (Toronto), Liam Dwyer, Jordy Toby (Hamwicks), Jonty Dicks (Cardiff), Jake Radford (Belmont) and Jason Sangha (Wallsend).
