Council has repeatedly failed to understand that it is not their hall to take but, rather, the community's. This is not only an arrogant assumption by council, but aggressive in its nature.
This is a community hall which is run independently from council.
Too often councils demolish perfectly good (historical) buildings under the guise of progress.
I spoke to an out-of-area couple attending the recent art show at the hall, who told me their local council had demolished their local community hall only to replace it with a building that is now not used.
They described the new monstrosity as a white elephant.
Their out-of-touch council decided the fate of a building that was much loved and used.
They spent millions of ratepayer dollars. What a waste.
Morisset Memorial Hall has been built by the community in memory of men who served in World War I.
This important fact holds extreme cultural and historical significance to the town and should not be dismissed.
Furthermore, this significance cannot be reduced to some tokenistic symbol placed in a new building that had nothing to do with this history. This building is a unique space and is occupied by many community groups.
It needs to be preserved for these groups and for future generations.
