CAT owners mistakenly believe that because their cat is well fed it doesn't kill native wildlife.
Another misconception is that their cat is too young to be desexed.
These are just two of the issues raised in the brochure, Responsible Cat Care, published by the LT Creek Sustainable Neighbourhood Group.
"People think that because their cat is well fed, they don't hunt. But they do hunt," cat owner and group chairwoman Robyn Charlton, of Blackalls Park, said.
"The other big mistake is not getting their cats desexed early enough."
Ms Charlton said cats should ideally be kept indoors, or in a confined cat run outside.
The brochure covers general care tips, legal responsibilities, cat and wildlife management and desexing advice.
It has been distributed to Blackalls Park, Fassifern and Fennell Bay households.
The brochure was developed with support from Lake Macquarie City Council.
