We all know one of these people who volunteer their time for others, and they are highly unlikely to seek recognition for themselves.
But it is important the wider community recognises their selfless work.
The Lake Macquarie Australia Day Awards acknowledge outstanding individuals, groups and events that have contributed significantly to community life.
This year's winners were all instrumental in improving the health and lifestyle in our community.
The winners included Citizen of the Year, David Helmers; Young Citizen of the Year - under 18 years, Jack Antcliff; Young Citizen of the Year - 18 years to 30 years, Bianca Judd; Volunteer of the Year, the late Donald Spence; Community Group of the Year, Dudley Sustainable Neighbourhood Group; and Community Event of the Year, Cancer Council Lake Macquarie/Newcastle Relay for Life.
The winners of the 2015 Lake Macquarie Australia Day awards will be announced and nominees recognised at a special Australia Day Awards ceremony in January.
I encourage you all to think about someone you know who deserves recognition.
Nomination forms are available at lakemac.com.au/ausawards or by calling 4921 0333. Nominations close on Monday, October 27.
