SUNSHINE residents Brian "Goldie" Goldsmith and David Jones will join musical forces to help launch the 27th Newcastle Jazz Festival at Newcastle Jockey Club this weekend.
The pair are part of Le Toot Ensemble, who will kick off the festival at 10am on Saturday.
"Goldie plays a mean saxophone while Dave Jones is the band's drummer," festival organiser Doug Saxon said.
"Both men are also vocalists. Dave will be in demand across the weekend playing with Andy Firth, one of Australia's leading clarinet and sax players in his Nova Swing Jazz Band, and with a big band, Swing Company.
"Goldie will also perform with the Tony Pigott quintet on Sunday afternoon."
The festival will be held in five rooms and a large marquee.
Fifty bands and more than 200 musicians will give patrons a choice of styles from traditional jazz to Latin to big band.
Among the festival highlights will be the 18-piece Dungeon Big Band and Psycho Zydeco.
