The roundabout will be the main feature of a $4 million upgrade of the site.
Lake Macquarie City Council's assistant assets manager, Laura Kendall, said the works would also involve road widening and resurfacing, and drainage improvements.
"The project is part of council's commitment to providing safer roads across the city," Ms Kendall said.
Work is being carried out Monday to Friday, from 7am to 6pm, and some weekends. Wyee and Rutleys roads will remain open during the work. The speed limit has been reduced from 90km/h to 40km/h.
The Lakes Mail has observed police enforcing the reduced speed limits.
"Road users are asked to follow the direction of traffic controllers and to adhere to reduced speed limits and follow traffic signs," Ms Kendall said.
The works are expected to be completed by mid-2015, weather permitting.
