Mr Phillips, of Dora Creek, said Rotary's record of achievement was compelling.
"When we invite guests along to our dinners they are often moved when they see what Rotary actually does," Mr Phillips said.
It's what prompts some guests to join the service club.
Whether it's eradicating polio on a world scale, or helping out at a local school, Rotary gets things done.
"As a member of Rotary you can involve yourself with any aspect of humanitarian work and at any level," he said.
About 60 Rotarians and friends recently gathered at a dinner function at Wangi Wangi Workers Club to celebrate the Morisset club's achievements and welcome Mr Phillips to the role.
A highlight was the presentation of three Paul Harris Fellowship awards.
The awards recognise the special efforts of Rotarians and community members in making the world a better place.
This year's recipients were state Member for Lake Macquarie Greg Piper, who received his award from Brian Atkins (past district governor for Rotary district 9670), and Rotarians John and Sandy Olive, of Buttaba.
Each award is supported by a US$1000 donation from the club to the Rotary Foundation's Polio Eradication Campaign.
Past member Noel Drinkwater spoke of his delight in receiving a sapphire pin to add to his Paul Harris Fellowship for his many years of service.
