AS a ratepayer of many years, I read with some amusement the suggestion made by correspondent Carl Stevenson ("Rainfall runoff is the real danger", Lakes Mail July 2) that the council could possibly build a second ocean outlet for Lake Macquarie.

Why, I ask, is it reasonable to consider that the council could borrow the countless millions or possibly even billions of dollars needed to do this?
This project would be of a similar size to a third Sydney Harbour crossing . . . the cost would exceed the repair of all roads, the provision of sewerage to Wyee and its surrounding areas, and the repair and maintenance of all drains in Lake Macquarie for the foreseeable future.
Please, Mr Stevenson, if you insist on being a thorn in council's side, do it for some sane reason.
