Ms Skelton took the picture recently while working as a crew member for Imagine Cruises off Port Stephens.
The photograph was published on the front page of the Newcastle Herald.
It has since received hundreds of thousands of online views from around the world.
"Lisa is currently pursuing her career as a music teacher, but who knows where her photographic skills may take her?" the school's newsletter said.
Meanwhile Migaloo, the famous humpback dubbed the Holy Grail of whale watching, attracted a flotilla of watchers as he cruised past the region.
Imagine Cruises skipper Frank Future told the Newcastle Herald he had been waiting years to spot the spectacular creature in the flesh.
"He's not got a barnacle on him," Mr Future said.
"He's just like marble."
