To understand why, we need only see the events of Easter in historical context and understand how history repeats itself.
Jesus sought the revitalization of religious faith through his interpretation of Scripture, his astounding choice of table companions, his crossing of boundaries involving religious taboos, his encouragement of women and children, and his miracles of healing and exorcism.
He swept through Galilee and developed a huge following.
When Jesus set out for Jerusalem a huge crowd announced him as a king on the approach to the city.
His immediate action of overturning tables in the Jerusalem Temple, and teaching against the ruling religious elite, challenged the Roman political overlords and the city’s religious leaders.
Jesus saw from the beginning that his values would lead to his death.
The ultimate weapon used against Jesus had two barrels.
Crucifixion caused the fear of a tortuous death.
In an honour and shame society, it also created the shame that would silence the victim.
But Jesus could not be intimidated and emerged as the victor. The true test of our faith is not how loudly we sing hymns, but whether we have the courage to follow him.
