A firefighter, Ms Kelly is using her profile to encourage others to join community volunteer groups, such as the Rural Fire Service (RFS).

"My truck was actually the one that was defending the pub - we knocked down the door to put out the [fire] inside," she said.

"I didn't even realise, because they just gave me a hose and said go defend that building."

The 21-year-old, from Mirrabooka, joined the RFS in 2011. She said it was something she had always wanted to do.

"Living close to the fire station I would always see the big fire trucks and the people in fire gear," Ms Kelly said.

"I was feeling extremely brave one day, so I phoned the captain and asked if I could join," she laughed.

"I thought I could do something and make a difference if I joined."

Ms Kelly said she is also passionate about agriculture.

She hopes to combine that love with her other passion, biotechnology, which she is studying at Newcastle University.

"That could be anything from fiddling with the genes of current crop plants and making them have better yield or to survive droughts, or looking at the genetics behind really good quality beef cattle or dairy milk production," she said.

The showgirl experience has been an interesting one for Ms Kelly.

She said that although she had never done anything like it before, she is enjoying every moment.

"I'm extremely privileged to have the opportunity to be Morisset Showgirl and I'm really looking forward to spending the year learning more about agriculture and getting involved in the community," she said.

"I'm open to people to contact me and ask if I want to help out or be a part of community event."
