Liam flew in to Brisbane from Japan, where he had been in training.
Competing in the under-66kg division, he contested the under-20 and senior men's competitions.
Coach Pete Acciari, from the Kido Mingara Judo Academy at Tuggerah, said Liam was unlucky not to claim the gold in the under-20 final.
"Liam relied on his natural ability and solid judo skills by winning with quality throws in his lead-up bouts to the under-20 final," Acciari said.
"He was only stopped in the final in extra time when he lost by penalty."
The Morisset High School student found his draw in the senior men's division studded with former champions.
"Liam started well in his first bout by defeating the reigning national title holder then two more NSW opponents by full point ippon scores," Acciari said.
"His only loss was in the semis to four-times Oceania Championship player and London Olympian, Ivos Dos Santos, of Victoria, the eventual winner."
The result forced Liam into the repechage round where he won bronze.
Acciari said the teenager was looking forward to more international training in preparation for the national titles in June.
