Fallen power lines set car alight at Morisset

THE two male occupants of this car were lucky to escape with their lives after allegedly crashing into a power pole and sparking a fire at Morisset in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Witnesses told police that a passenger was ejected from the silver Corolla when it struck and snapped a power pole on Stockton Street, near Goodwins Road, about 4.30am.

The passenger reportedly dragged the driver from the vehicle, moments before it was destroyed by a fire sparked by the fallen power lines.

Police said the vehicle had earlier been stolen from the Morisset area.

"The two occupants were last seen limping away from the scene, towards the rear of The Grange Village (retirement village)," a police spokesperson said.

A spokesperson for Ausgrid said the power pole was snapped about a metre from the ground.

"It caused a power outage for 20 customers for about seven hours," the spokesperson said.

Ausgrid crews used a crane to install a new power pole and reconnect the electricity supply.

Locals praised Ausgrid's response.

Police have urged anyone with information about the incident to contact Toronto officers on 4950 3699.
