The event was held at Toronto Public School to raise awareness of the work of Legacy.
Event organisers Meg Davey and Bev Lowrie said Legacy was sometimes thought of as an organisation that supported old people.
Although that is true, it also provides assistance to young families today.
"The work of Legacy is just as current and important today as it ever was, and I think it's important for the children to understand that," Ms Davey said.
"We lost five young troops in Afghanistan last year, and each of those soldiers left behind young wives and families," Ms Lowrie said.
A Legacy official came to the school before Red Shirt Friday and explained how Legacy helps families with food, clothing, money and schooling.
Principal Sharon McFarlane said the event was not a show of support for war, but support for the service personnel.
The school raised more than $200 for Legacy on the day.
Staff at the school have been wearing red shirts every Friday this year.
