Rush makes final emotional appeal

26 Aug, 2010 06:50 PM
Death row inmate Scott Rush today made an emotional appeal to a Denpasar court to be spared execution, telling a panel of judges he often thinks how long it would take to die if he went before a firing squad.

"I often wake up having nightmares," the 24 year old Brisbane native and convicted drug smuggler said. "I often think about the firing squad and how long it would take to die."

Before he made his statement, Rush broke into tears after his eyes locked on his parents, sitting in the front row of the public gallery.

Rush, the youngest member of the Bali Nine drug smuggling syndicate expressed his deep remorse for his actions and apologised to the court, his family and the community more generally for his conduct.

Rush was arrested in 2005, caught at Denpasar airport with heroin strapped to his body. It was his first overseas trip and his father, Lee Rush, had unsuccessfully tried to convince the Australian Federal Police to stop him before he left on the fateful trip to Bali.

Mr Rush and Rush's mother Christine were in the court today.

Appearing pale and drawn, Rush was met by a large media swarm when he arrived at the court.

The judges listened attentively to his 13 minute statement, composed in the "death tower" at Kerobokan prison last week.

Rush is making his final legal appeal to overturn the death sentence. If he fails, his only other avenue of redress is by a direct plea for clemency to Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
