A BIRDIE on the play-off hole was all that separated winner Alex Pitty from runner-up Dimi Papadatos at the recent Kooindah Cup at Wyong.
Both players finished with a scratch 72 over the 18 holes.
In the first play-off hole Pitty, 18, of Kariong, rolled in a birdie to trump Papadatos, 19, of Norah Head, who scored a par.
Pitty also won the nett event with a score of 72.
Papadatos went some way to exorcising any demons that had lingered following his performance in last year's Kooindah Cup where he took an 11 on the par-5 eighth hole, then an eight on the par-4 13th hole.
"I just had two very bad holes," Papadatos told The Lakes Mail.
"They were disasters, things that only happen about once every year.
"It makes you realise that if you just switch off for a second it can happen."
Papadatos - who plays off a handicap of plus-3 - honed his game as a member of Toukley Golf Club, but now represents The Lakes.
Meanwhile, Kooindah golfers will contest a novel event over three consecutive Saturdays, starting this Saturday, August 7, with a stableford competition.
It will be followed by par and stroke rounds.
