THINGS might look grim for Toronto Awaba on the Northern NSW State League competition ladder, but at the weekend the club got a glimpse of a much brighter future.
Competing in the final eight of the Solo Cup competition at Coffs Harbour, Toronto won its quarter-final against Oxley Vale Attunga 8-3 on Saturday, with four promoted under-18 players leading the way.
"David McPherson is a 16-year-old who I brought on in the 65th minute, and by the end of the game he'd scored a hat-trick," Toronto's player-coach Scott Baillie said.
Todd Crawley, 20, also bagged a hat-trick in the game.
"The boys have really transformed into a new side, and are responding well to what I'm saying."
Centre midfielder Wilson Edwards, 16, was another young player to earn a rap from the coach.
In their semi-final against Valentine on Sunday, Toronto lost 3-1 after Christian Okonkwo was unlucky to receive a red card for dissent shortly before the break.
"It was nil-all at half time and we did pretty well considering we had 10 men. There are good signs there for the future," Baillie said.
This Sunday, Toronto will take on competition leaders Weston Workers from 2.30pm at Weston Park, in their return to the Northern NSW State League competition.
