Roos sting Scorpions

22 Jul, 2010 01:00 AM
WYONG Roos flexed their premiership muscles with a 70-12 win over Macquarie in the Tooheys Cup rugby league match at Peacock Field on Sunday.

Wyong scored 12 tries to lead 70-nil before the home team rallied to post three tries in the final eight minutes.

Wyong was clinical in its execution from the outset.

Coach Paul Stringer had been critical of his team's habit this season of starting matches slowly and conceding early points.

But on Sunday the opening minutes resembled a training run for Wyong.

Set plays unlocked the Macquarie defence, support players ran into holes, and passes stuck.

The up-tempo blitz ran the Macquarie defence ragged, and as fatigue took hold, the Scorpion error count escalated.

"We never got out of our 20-metre area in the first 15 minutes," Macquarie football secretary Stephen Woodbridge said.

"That took its toll and we couldn't hold on."

Wyong had impact right across the park, with English prop Chris Feather, hooker Mitch Williams, pivot Chad Sharp and energetic second-rower Bodie O'Connell a constant threat in attack.

Feather proved particularly difficult to put on the ground, even though Macquarie defenders often attacked him in numbers.

The depleted Scorpions, who are battling on without seven injured players for the remainder of the season, were aggressive and spirited to the end.

Their effort was typified by gutsy fullback Nathan Curry.

The Scorpions' custodian sustained a heavy head knock while attempting to stop centre Wes Tillott's explosive charge to the line.

Minutes later when Wyong threatened to score another runaway try, Curry shook off the cobwebs and chased hard for 50 metres to run down his opposite number Josh Mantellato with a tackle which earned rousing applause from the home crowd.

"Nathan also went into the game with a broken bone in his hand," Woodbridge said.

Macquarie hooker Daniel Bates topped an extraordinary tackle count, with lock Josh Schmiedel next best.

"Wyong was just too big, too fast and too structured," Woodbridge said.

This Sunday, Wyong will host Souths at Morry Breen Field, Kanwal.

Macquarie, meanwhile, will travel to Harker Oval to take on Wests.
