Macquarie juniors get tough job done

01 Jul, 2010 01:00 AM
SIX former club juniors helped the injury-ravaged Macquarie Scorpions to score a rousing last-minute 26-22 win over Central Newcastle in their Tooheys Cup rugby league match at St John Oval on Sunday.

In their last attacking raid of the game, Macquarie shifted the ball quickly to the right flank where winger Clayton Carey dived over to score the clincher with 50 seconds left on the clock.

Macquarie football secretary Steve Woodbridge said the try, and subsequent conversion by Dane Thorogood, capped a remarkable win for the Scorpions.

"We have four players out injured for the rest of the season, and we had another five out on Sunday, so to have six club juniors come through for us in first grade was very pleasing," Woodbridge said.

Among the impressive juniors was 17-year-old Zac Koziek who made his first grade debut in the back row.

While the club's young brigade was impressive, it was the front-row pairing of Brent Colley and Jade Davison who were the team's best, Woodbridge said.

Wyong, meanwhile, lost 32-24 to Wests at Harker Oval.

This Sunday, Macquarie will host Maitland, and Wyong is at home to Kurri Kurri. Both games kick off at 3pm.
