FOR once, the score mattered little in this game of schoolboy rugby union.
For the record, Macquarie College was beaten 45-19 by its sister school, Brisbane Adventist College (BAC).
But the fixture will be fondly remembered because it was the first ever game of rugby union played by the local college.
In fact, 14 of the college's squad of 20 players had never played the game.
For the past six months co-coaches Shaun McLeod and Aaron Williams had been teaching the Macquarie College boys the rules and skills of the game. And they were hastily revising those rules and skills with their team right up until kick-off at Walters Park, Boolaroo, on Thursday.
"So to score 19 points against a team that has been playing competition rugby for a year was a real effort," Mr Williams told The Lakes Mail.
Indeed, the courage and determination shown by Macquarie against a bigger and more experienced opponent was admirable.
"The players are a credit to themselves and the college," Mr McLeod said.
"Lifelong friends have been made through the game of rugby, and this has been a wonderful start to the college's playing program."
Captain Nick McLeod and vice-captain Callan Walker were outstanding for the home team, while fullback Trent Martin broke the BAC defensive line on several occasions.
The college's first try was scored by Andrew Chandler in his first ever game of rugby union.
The BAC students were hosted and billeted by Macquarie College students and their families.
