THE Wyong Roos must defeat 2009 grand-final opponents Cessnock this Saturday or suffer elimination from the Tooheys Cup rugby league premiership.
Wyong lost 24-22 to Western Suburbs in their qualifying semi-final at Harker Oval on Sunday.
In a thrilling finale to an intense showdown, Wests centre David Pangai scored a try with 34 seconds remaining to steal victory for the home team.
Wyong looked to have the match sewn up when pivot Chad Sharp sliced through to score a try and take Wyong to a 22-16 lead in the 73rd minute.
Wyong hooker Mitch Williams told The Newcastle Herald it was a tough way to lose such a big game.
"It's just one more tackle and we go through and they don't, but that's footy," Williams said.
In three meetings this season, Wyong has yet to defeat Wests. They came closest in Round 6 when they scored a 16-all draw.
"I think they keep getting us in 10-minute lapses," Williams said of Wests' record against the Roos.
Centre Jamie Davis was strong for Wyong, crossing for two tries in the first stanza, and completing a hat-trick early in the second half.
Wyong will play Cessnock at 3pm this Saturday at Morry Breen Field.
